Onondaga Historical Association is featuring a 30th Anniversary celebration of the Syracuse Cultural Workers, through an exhibit of 100 of their most highly regarded and “inspirational” posters. Posters are just one of many message-oriented resources Syracuse Cultural Workers designs, produces and distributes throughout North America, aimed at advancing social justice, sustainability and peace. Syracuse Cultural Workers' mission and 30th Anniversary exhibit complement OHA’s, “Power of the People.” This permanent collection salutes notable activists and their social/political impact on Central New York history, including the abolitionists, Women Suffrage Movement, the Underground Railroad, and the Native Americans.

The opening reception for this exhibit will be from 5pm - 8pm on October 18, 2012. This reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.

OHA has amassed a collection of over 2,000 stereographs, or stereo views, of Onondaga County and beyond. Archived in the research holdings, these 3-D photographs have never before been exhibited. Guest curator Colleen Woolpert offers an overview of the collection, providing insight into the little known history of stereo photography while taking us back into the past with the aid of exhibition stereoscopes. The exhibit will be of interest to adults and children alike with historic viewing devices, books, and related 3-D ephemera.

Colleen Woolpert is an interdisciplinary artist who uses photography, video, installation, and performance to explore visual and psychological perception. Her work includes the stereographic viewers at Forman Park in Syracuse, part of the Connective Corridor. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit on Friday, September 21 from 4 - 6 pm. The exhibit, reception, and museum are free and open to the public. The museum is open W-F 10 am - 4 pm; and S-S 11 am - 4 pm.

Transforming Syracuse's Lakefront: The 25th Anniversary of a Bold Vision, 1987-2012 is a six-panel traveling exhibit that explores the significant changes that have occurred to the Syracuse Lakefront district since officials of the Pyramid Companies and the City of Syracuse first announced plans to begin a redevelopment of the city's waterfront. Viewers will learn of the lakefront's long human history, and how the area once served as the heart of Syracuse's great salt industry. The exhibit then examines, using before and after images, the impact of the completion of a series of lakefront projects, with the Carousel Center serving as the catalyst for change. These transformations include: the removal of dozens of oil tanks to create the Inner Harbor; the clean-up of Onondaga Creek and the creation of the Creekwalk; the renovation of many abandoned industrial buildings to create the historic Franklin Square neighborhood.

The exhibit can be viewed at the Onondaga Historical Association until December 1, 2012. Museum hours are W-F 10 am - 4 pm, S-S 11 am - 4 pm. The museum and exhibit are free and open to the public. For more information about OHA, visit www.cnyhistory.org

Onondaga Historical Association announces an opening reception for two new exhibits, Manifest Destiny and the American West, and Last House, in the museum at OHA on September 21, 2012 from 4 - 6 p.m. These exhibits are mounted as part of The Other New York (TONY):2012, Syracuse's art biennial.

Both of OHA's TONY: 2012 exhibits are artistically presented interpretations of dynamic social trends that are part of the historic legacy of Central New York. The reception and exhibits are free and open to the public. Manifest Destiny and the American West is by Buffalo artist Robert Hirsch, who employs nearly 1,000 images in a stylized three-dimensional display. The exhibit asks the visitor to think about how our nation's geographic progression across the continent has shaped American culture.

The desire to exploit the salt brine reserves on Onondaga Lake contributed to a westward migration of settlers across Central New York in the post-American Revolution era, while the construction of the Erie Canal enhanced this movement through the 19th century and enabled many travelers to inhabit lands in the farther reaches of the American continent. Last House is a multi-channel video installation by media artist Carl Lee that explores the aesthetics and means of a house demolition in Buffalo, NY. Cities like Buffalo and Syracuse are faced with a large number of abandoned houses. This video asks us to think about what we gain and lose in demolishing them. This installation will be accompanied by three paintings by Western New York artist Amy Geeham of vacant houses in Syracuse awaiting an uncertain future, including Not Here, Not Now, her interpretation of 711 Tully St.

The opening reception for OHA's TONY: 2012 exhibits Manifest Destiny and Last House, will be on Friday, September 21 at OHA, 321 Montgomery St., Syracuse, NY from 4 - 6 p.m. The reception, exhibits and museum are free and open to the public. Museum hours of operation are W-F, 10 am - 4 pm and S-S, 11 am - 4 pm. For more information, see www.cnyhistory.org or call 428-1864 X 314.

Exhibit: Prophecy - Peter B. Jones

Prophecy is a timely exhibition pertaining to Indigenous prophecies. By incorporating themes of ecology, creation, demise and the future according to the Mayan calendar, traditional Iroquois teachings and other cultural beliefs, Jones provides a visual representation of the foretold truths.

Eighteenth century Iroquois prophet Handsome Lake predicted that the world as we know it would come to an end in December, 2012. Prophecy: Peter B. Jones presents a contemporary interpretation of Handsome Lake's apocalyptic prophecy. Jones is one of the most recognized and accomplished Iroquois artists working today. His forty-five year career has been achieved and maintained by the mastery of his medium and the establishment of a solid repertoire of work in clay. By studying traditional techniques developed over time by ancient civilizations such as the Hopewell and Mississippian, and later, his own Iroquois culture, Jones is one of several artists responsible for re-invigorating (reactivating) and mentoring a distinct traditional pottery practice among the Haudenosaunee. Yet, clay also serves as a contemporary medium that Jones manipulates as an expressive means for functional and sculptural artistic traditions to co-exist.

Peter B. Jones was born on June 8, 1947 into the Beaver Clan of the Onondaga Nation at the Cattaraugus Reservation in Seneca Territory (northwest New York State). Jones received his Associates of Fine Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1968. At IAIA, he was strongly influenced by Otellie Loloma (1922-92), a highly acclaimed Hopi ceramicist, who taught him to merge traditional protocol and practice with classical Western clay techniques. During this time, Jones's work took on a pan-Indian style that was influenced by IAIA's diverse student body, the Southwest, and the effects of the civil rights movement on Indian solidarity forming across the country. Red Paint Can (1965) is Jones's enduring critique of the social, political, and popular culture movements that yielded a "new breed" of non-Indian individuals desiring Native identity.
