Opening Reception for the 15th Ward
Opening reception for our new exhibit about the 15th Ward in celebration of Black History Month. The reception and exhibit are sponsored by the Graduate Program in Museum Studies at Syracuse University. The 15th Ward was a Syracuse neighborhood bordering the Erie Canal. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became one of the largest Jewish neighborhoods in upstate New York. Beginning in the 1940s, as Jewish residents relocated to the eastern suburbs, African Americans moved into the neighborhood building a thriving cultural area that included jazz clubs and churches. The 15th Ward met its end when the construction of Interstate 81 two state hospitals and the federal urban renewal program led to the demolition of most of the homes and businesses in the area and the removal of nearly all of the residents.
